Uitvlugt 1990, 31 years, Guyana edition No. 4
Uitvlugt (pronounced “eye-flut”) is a village in Guyana, based on the west bank of the Demerara River. The Dutch-owned Uitvlugt Distillery was established around 1750, housing double wooden pot stills which produced a characteristically heavy rum. In 1975 the government began consolidating rum production, and this sadly saw the closure of Uitvlugt in 2000.
Uitvlugt no 4 was produced at Double Wooden Pot Still. This expression has spent 31 years in an ex-rum barrel and was bottled in 2022 at 48,4% ABV. There are just 161 bottles in this batch.

Tasting Notes:
“I've seen somewhere that this baby was 'matured in a Double Wooden Pot Still'. Honestly! Colour: light gold. Aged in Europe. Nose: take an old, early-1980s Clynelish, add fennel seeds, caraway, celery, lime tea and wee bits of yam, and there, you replicated this charmingly fresh old Uitvlugt. Mouth: sublime saltiness, smoked fish, liquorice, tight green lemons (not lime), olives, bitter almonds and just all kinds of clay, then a magnum of bone-dry petroly Alsatian riesling that will send shivers down your spine. Finish: long, salty, oily, lemony, superb. Comments: some sides almost reminded me of clean Highland Park. Okay, say fifty Clynelish and fifty HP. Extremely high class.”

“Nose: dusty wood, clay and light vegetal notes. Burnt thyme and caraway seeds. Then slightly more funky notes of plasticine, gasoline and freshly painted metal. A citrusy note underneath. Moist autumn leaves too. It’s a fairly elegant profile, with the funky side perfectly rounded off.
Mouth: now more powerful than I expected. I’m getting black olives, sweet lemons, subtle brine, bitter almonds and ginger cake. Liquorice and tar as well, with a dose of nutmeg and pepper growing stronger, but again it’s not as edgy as it sounds. Later on citrusy notes and suble stewed orchard fruits make it rounder.
Finish: medium long, mild and oily, with salted fruits, bitter almond and a steely edge.
A very classy Uitvlugt, in a highly developed dry style. There are a few uncommon touches, adding complexity. …”

A complex rum with rather heavy notes of wood, leather, salt, and meat.
