Uitvlugt 1999, 21 years, Guyana edition No. 1
Uitvlugt (pronounced “eye-flut”) is a village in Guyana, based on the west bank of the Demerara River. The Dutch-owned Uitvlugt Distillery was established around 1750, housing double wooden pot stills which produced a characteristically heavy rum. In 1975 the government began consolidating rum production, and this sadly saw the closure of Uitvglut in 2000. The good news was that the eponymous legendary wooden pot still, was saved and is still in use today being the source of our 26-year-old rum. It matured for 2 years in the tropics and was later aged in Europe in a recycled ex-Rum cask. The cask for our Guyana (Uitvlugt) 1999 Rum, yielded only 184 bottles, and is one of the smallest releases in our collection. Bottled at cask strength of 52.6% ABV.

Tasting Notes:
“The nose is quite fruity and floral with a lot of green apple, pear and that unmistakable Demerara raisin note. [..] Sipped, its much drier and smokier than the nose leads you to believe. It has a musty almost soot like note. [..] It’s smoky notes are quite nice and are layered over the raisin and apple notes. There is a slightly tarry note as you move into the mid palate. There’s a nice hit of aniseed especially on the initial sips and that moves down into the mid palate. It’s quite a savoury/whisky-esque rum but it does have enough sweetness to stop it going too far down that route.”

“I should be in Warsaw when I publish this. Colour: straw. Nose: awesome grassy and petroly start, very typical, with even asparagus, leek, wisteria, honeysuckle and above all, elderflowers. Whiffs of new shoes, leatherette… With water: perfect sauna oils and myrtle, plus more asparagus, plus grapefruit skin. Unquestionably perfect combo, as far as combos go (what?) Mouth (neat): these are just superb. Lemons, brine, riesling, liquorice, green bananas, smoked fish, tar… With water: the saltiness further comes out, sardines, anchovies, salted liquorice, some varnish… Finish: long, saltier. One of the saltiest spirits, no one does this on Islay. Perhaps 'some' Bowmores. Comments: shortage stress starting to strike us. Do they still have many from these quasi-continental batches?”
